Heidi ran the water from the tap over her cereal bowl humming along with the radio. She smiled as Chris walked into the room he looked serious. Heidi set down her bowl in the dish rack "Hun?" He sighed "Are you going to marry me?" Heidi looked confused. "What?" He held up the phone "Phil is getting married." Heidi smiled "To Liza, that's so sweet." She sat down at the kitchen table "What will we wear? Is it spring or winter?" She looked giddy with excitement as her mind raced. Chris sighed "No Melody." Heidi looked up; it was the same as parents using your middle name. Her brow furrowed as she stood back up, and walked over to him, he continued "Hey, babe, I love you-" Heidi stopped him "I love you too." "But- Look I am tired of getting wedding invite, after wedding invite, of all of my friends and family getting married." Heidi looked at him "What are you saying?" "I love you more than anything, why can you not just go out on a limb and marry me?" Heidi looked hurt "Honey, why does it matter? I love you, you love me. Why can that not be enough?" He looked at her "I do not like going to business parties and the guys crack jokes about you never marring me. Donald has married twice since we started dating. I cannot get you health care because the company does not care how long we have been together, just we are not married." He looked her in the eye "I need to know if you care enough to continue this relationship." Heidi was back in her chair by now "Chris I dont know." She started to choke on tears "Why?" He sat down on the end of the table "What is so hard?" He threw his hands at his chest "Are you seeing someone else, why cant I be it for you!" He started to yell, and Heidi cried "I love you!" He yelled "Then why?" She cried and looked at him "I dont know why!" Chris sat beside her at the table "Look, I just cannot do it anymore." Heidi wiped her face on the back of her hand "I love you, you are my only, I want you more than anything." She chanted off. She huddled her knees toward her body and stared off. He leaned in "Why is it like this?" He pulled a piece of hair from her face. Her eyes looked up and a tear ran down "No please, I cant be-" Chris sighed and looked down. "Goodbye." He walked toward the bedroom and she heard a zipper undo. She walked toward the room and leaned on the door frame "Chris be reasonable, I love you more than all of their wives combined-" He shook his head and continued to throw things into the suitcase. She entered the room and sat on the bed "Chris listen to me-" He looked around and threw a magazine in. "Hun, I love you, but I cannot love you if you will not marry me." "WHY?" She shrieked at his head. Chris pulled down the suitcase and rolled it toward the door. She ran in front of the door "No please-" He tried to go around but she leaned over toward the other side. "Melody if you do not move now-" "What!" She yelled on her tiptoe "Leave me?" He ground his teeth together "What?" she yelled again. She hit him in the chest "What?" He pushed her back "Melody just let me-" She hit his arm "I hate you!" "Melody I cannot do this just let me leave." His voice cracked and he looked away. He ran out of room with his suitcase. He paused at the doorframe "Heidi, I love you, please understand-" He closed the door behind him and she sank to the floor her heart pounding she laid on the ground and dry heaved.
