Snow fell outside of the Rigby's old, creaky house. The porch's concave roof was heavy with piles of the stuff, icicles dripping down it's sides. Yes, it was very berry cold outside; but inside, the heat was on.
Kairu Rigby stirred the batter for her family's treasured cookies furtively. Her hair was pulled into a loose ponytail, the freshly-cut bob's ends red and green in the seasonal spirit. "a nice change in the name of the fat man", she had explained when her husby, Smith Rigby, had asked when he spotted the dyes. Now, in the pleasantly dimmed lights, the new colors shown proudly. Kairu stirred the mixture a third time, her shirts green sleeves rolled back. even her skinny jeans had a seasonal flair- Red and green stitching.
Needless to say, she loved Christmas.
"Love, what are you making?" a voice called from the fireplace with a pop. It was Smith himself who had used the floo network to make it home from work, and was now inquiring to his wife. He ran into the kitchen, sneaking a kiss before setting down his coat. This was their first Christmas as a married couple. They where in love, just in love; no pressures or responsibilities. They had finally gotten their forever after, and it felt as if they where second years again. The other day, Kairu poured out some chex to find a secret note. "Love of my life" It read, "It isn't possible to explain the way I feel." The rest was a sweet and loving mush. Now they kissed in the dim lights, Kairu dropping her spatula in the dough mixture; they broke away after what seemed like years. "Checkerboard cookies." The phone rang, breaking this moment; Kairu ran to it and answered. "Hello?" "Kairu?" It was her sister in law, Rebecca. Kairu dropped the phone. "It's your sister." She said with a snarl. Smith picked it up and began talking about the hollidays. Meanwhile, Kairu baked and baked. She was just pulling out a batch of Pepermint twists when someone came in through the door.
"At least She's not your blood relative..."hazel said darkly, glaring at the phone with darkly lined eyes, drawn up by cat like liner . "But it's christmas!" she said brightly, twirling the full skirt of her plum colored silk tea dress, with cream colored tights underneath ( and black mary janes) . Layers of glitter dusted lavender tulle showed from under the skirt and twinkled in the soft light. Glitter dusted her face as well, and her hair was pulled into low pigtails, with a cream silk bow on a black leather headband horizontally around her forehead. Hazel skipped forward to hug Kairu. Meanwhile, paul came in. "It's Christmas, Hazel! Why are you dressed like that??" he questioned. Hazel turned around and pouted. "Ima Sugar Plum!" she retorted. "Happy Christmas, Kairu, Smith! What are you making? I smell tasties!"
Kairu squeeled as she hug her verry, verry well dressed friend. "Hazel, you always look fabulous." Smith said, walking to paul to do some sort of schoolboyish thing. "Why can't you dress like that?" He laughed to Kairu. "...and I made these amazing scones..." Kairu, of corse, was excitedly telling her old friend about all the bakings, and never heard a word. Smith raised one eyebrow.
"scones scones scones scones SCONES!!!!" hazel giggled, in a state of natural Christmas high. Paul laughed at his silly little sugarplum fiancee, and turned to talk to Smith."Soooooo. Is anybody else coming?" he questioned.
"Not that I know of, but Kai's been talking about it..." Smith replied.
Kairu sat down on her tiny table, pouring sugar spice tea into little cups. "Oh!" She put down her cup. "I got you something!" She walked out to the next room, comming back with a package.
"Oh, thanks! " hazel said, forgetting about the whole presents on christmas thing for a few seconds, even thought kairu's present was in her magical sequined pouch (also plum colored). She got it out. and pauls present for kairu, and his present for smith, and her present for Smith, and laid them one by one on the couch.
"Wowzers!" Kairu exclaimed, setting down another package. Smith threw his hands into the air. "Ima go get pauls now!" he rushed upstairs to fetch it. He returned with a small package about the size of a deck o' cards. "This,-" He tapped the blue and gold wrapping, "-I think, you will like." Kairu chuckled. Of corse, she knew what it was. "So, what should we open first?" She addressed the group.
...a philosophy book, a black and red striped bow tie ( actually for casual wear), and a nice large box of chocolates. The package also contained a nice navy blue t-shirt, which hazel had appliqued with a deer and kangaroo, "yes, its predictable, but still nice anyways, I think." hazel remarked on the shirt. "Kairu, you might as well open yours too, since smith got his..." she trailed off
Smith grinned. "Thanks, Hazel!" Kairu Was gleeful over the shirt, which just about trumped all gifts EVAR!!! she giggled upon opening hers, which contained the same shirt. "omigoodness!"
